Brief History
The origin of the town of Ternate is a saga of seven Merdica families-Malays from Moluccas- who were residents of the Old Bagumbayan (now Ermita), Manila. The Merdicas were transferred to Ternate, which was then known as "Barra de Maragondon", a sandbar at the mouth of the Maragondon River, by the Spanish authorities in the year 1700. Skilled warriors and well-known for their bravery, the services of the Merdicas were engaged by the Spanish Governor General to reinforce the Spanish contingent assigned to the area against attacks by Moro pirates. The Merdicas constructed a watch tower on a hilltop and for their livelihood, engaged in farming and fishing. They intermarried with the natives, build a stone church, a municipal building and a schoolhouse.
